Difference between Computer Science & Information Technology

The differences exist both at the academic level in the structure of the course and at the professional level, in the nature of your job and responsibilities.

Differences at academic level

Computer Science  is mainly concerned with the invention and development of new software and hardware. Course modules usually include Analysis and design of Algorithms,Theory of Computation, Computer Architecture, Data structures, Microprocessors, Computer programming etc

IT is mainly concerned with the selection and use of already-available software and hardware. Course modules would be Database Management, Artificial intelligence and Robotics, Networking and Communication etc

CS is involved in the design and construction of electronic systems while IT is involved in the usage of such systems for businesses

Difference at professional level

At the professional level, the computer scientist, software engineer and computer engineer all tend to view computing from the computer’s viewpoint by creating, developing and extending the underlying technology, while the information technologist tends to apply available technology to solve real-world problems for people.

Another way of describing the difference is that the information technologist identifies a need for underlying technology, which the computer scientist then creates if it doesn’t already exist, and which the information technologist adapts and helps people to use effectively.

 Education

     Community Colleges

Community colleges are two-year colleges, characterised by a curriculum which leads to an Associate degree or a transfer program. The first two years in Community college is parallel to first two years in a University.

While the system has widespread acceptance and is immensely popular with the Americans, it is yet to evolve among the international community specially students from the sub continent. However the spiraling costs of international education is forcing the more “price sensitive” sectors to find out ways to reduce the financial burden without compromise to quality of education or the qualification in the end. Community colleges seem to fit the bill

What are the advantages?

The primary advantage is the price. The first two years (Freshman and Sophomore) of the four-year degree is usually spent in acquiring credits for the General education modules with some course work done on the chosen major. These units can be completed at the Community colleges. Most American community colleges are public colleges accredited by American college and university accreditation associations, so credits earned at community college are equivalent to traditional university credits. They also offer a wide range of courses like Business, Architecture, Engineering Technology, Health Sciences, Legal studies etc and so cater to all disciplines and majors. All Universities in the US recognize and accept these credits so the students can essentially join the third year at his chosen University and graduate from there on.

The cost of tuition for the two years at the Community college is usually a third of what it would cost at the University. Many campuses are in suburban settings reducing living costs as well. Also with smaller class sizes and a better staff-student ratio, the students get better support from faculty. Most students tend to do well academically. Adapting to the US pattern of education is also easier.

What are the issues?

Some of the campuses tend to reflect domination of a particular ethnic group or community and so the demographics can be skewed and can pose a challenge to an international student. Some of the campuses are in rural settings with very little to offer by way of amenities. International students would have difficulty in settling in.

Not all colleges have pre – agreed articulation agreements with Universities so the transfer is not seamless. Students may have to go through the whole process of applying and waiting for offers

How do we address them?

  • Should you decide to go to a community college, ensure that it has a history of accepting international students. Also check out the demographics
  • Avoid choosing very small colleges even if the prices are attractive. Chances are you will not continue there.
  • Get a complete picture in terms of facilities, housing, part-time work etc.
  • Study the geography of the region to evaluate its Business prospects
  • Talk to the advisor to check out what support services are available for your transfer eventually.

 Career Spotlight

    Music Engineering

Do you love music? Do you like to work on computers? Do you often fiddle / work with gadgets? Does electronics fascinate you? – If the answer is yes to all these then Music Engineering may be just the career for you. Not only will you be able to contribute to the newest releases on the charts, you can change the way we listen to music or create new musical instruments. If you are ambitious, if you are hard working the field is wide open for you. Making music or music technology equipment is a complex process – A combination of the dynamics of your scientific knowledge and your creativity.

How do you go about it?

You could begin with enrolling into a traditional engineering program with an audio, music or acoustics concentration either at the Bachelors or Masters level. Alternatively you could tie up a bachelors degree in electrical / electronics with a graduate program in music engineering or digital signal processing. Such hybrid programs are always offered within the disciplines of two schools i.e. Engineering and Music.

Your creative instincts with right mechanical inputs help you visualize and design newer music technology equipment. The job prospects are enormous with audio mechanisms penetrating the game industry, the internet etc. You could have a niche for any of the following areas

· Studio engineering, installation, management
· Studio installation, maintenance, or management
· Music equipment design
· Sound systems / Recording systems for concerts
· Sound editing and reinforcing
· DVD production
· Software design
· Film, audio, and video production or post production
·
MIDI production
· Synthesizer programming
· Broadcasting

With a degree you would find a job as a recording engineer, multimedia author, sound reinforcement specialist, acoustical designer, studio designer, etc. The most common places to work include recording studios either for performers or soundtracks, audio equipment design or manufacturing companies, studio design companies, or for yourself as a freelance recording, mixing or mastering engineer. You may take on audio research work to develop better audio for portable devices or even diagnostic services. A good recording engineer is able to detect and translate not just the sound but the feelings of the artist – capture the essence. The approaches to careers as a recording engineer may be very different from the approach for a traditional engineering student seeking an audio engineering degree.

There is no question that the digital revolution is also changing the face of everything including music. Gone are the days of record labels. A zealous band will now record on MIDI in their own studio, burn to disk and distribute it on the Internet.
