 Editorial

Dear student,

We hope you have been enjoying our career newsletters. I am sure you have a few suggestions to improve. We value those inputs and welcome suggestions.

In the meantime a few points to ponder……

Do you know “how to learn”?? Yes people are different and so we learn differently too. Each one of us has our preferred learning style. Identifying your learning style allows you learn faster, better and with more far reaching results and it gets better – learning can actually be fun…

Three learning styles that can often be identified in students – Auditory (Sense of hearing) Visual (Sense of seeing) and Kinesthetic (Sense of feeling, movement)

Are you an Audi?
Do you seem to learn while listening to teacher lectures and class discussions? Do you find yourself reading aloud or talking things out to gain better understanding? If YES, you are probably an Auditory Learner

Tip : YOU could learn best by listening to audio tapes

Are you a Visual?
Do you do best in classes in which teachers do a lot of writing at the Blackboard, provide clear NOTES, and make extensive use of an overhead projector? Do you try to remember information by creating pictures in your mind? If YES, you are probably a Visual Learner.

Tip: Mindmaps could work best for YOU

Are you a Kino?
Do you learn best when you can move about and handle things? Do you do well in classes in which there is alab component? Do you learn better when you have an actual object in your hands? If YES, you are probably a Kinesthetic learner

Tip: Making Flash cards while learning will help YOU learn better

Remember YOUR learning style is your strength. Identify it. Use it whenever you can. When you choose a subject choose the one that matches your learning preference. Go a step further-  when choosing your career keep YOUR learning style in mind and align your choices to suit that. Success would then come naturally to YOU

With Best Wishes,

         Careers in Hospitality Management

Are you a people person? Do you have good communication skills? Does organising events excite you? Are you comfortable dealing with deadlines and adjusting to last minute changes?. Then you might want to look at the hotel industry for a challenging and satisfying career.

Glimpses into Careers in the Hotel industry..........

Hotel managers are responsible for every aspect of their hotel. Their job involves making sure guests are happy with the service, recruiting the right staff, ensuring the hotel has all the supplies and equipment it needs, and promoting special events.

Restaurant and catering managers combine an interest in food with strong people and budget management skills. It's their job to keep the business running smoothly, and customers and staff happy.

Conference and banqueting assistant/manager organises and runs events such as weddings, business presentations, corporate parties, private dinners, training events, sales conferences, promotions and product launches.

Bar managers manage licensed premises Bar staff serve drinks, snacks and often hot or cold food to customers in licensed premises. They also take payments, chat to customers, check details of customers who appear to be under age, assist with special promotions, keep the bar area clean and well stocked, wash glasses, and clean and clear tables regularly.

Sommeliers/Wine waiters manage the wine service in hotels and restaurants. They have expertise in wine and other alcoholic beverages, such as cocktails, beers and spirits.

Chefs use their creativity and love of food to create delicious dishes. They work in the kitchen of a restaurant or in outside catering. Chefs may start as commis chefs (junior or apprentice chefs). They learn about each of the different sections of the kitchen, how to make sauces and desserts, and how to cook meat and fish.
Kitchen supervisors or managers are usually trained chefs or cooks, who organise a team of chefs and kitchen assistants in hotels, restaurants, canteens and catering companies.

 Whats New

Griffith opens new centre in Dubai

Griffith University is proving to be a popular choice amongst international students. The number of applications has been growing steadily over the past several years and as a result enrolled GU international student numbers have now risen substantially to well over 7,000.

As a result of this increase in numbers the GU management has recognised that the student community needs more support and assistance. The GU Admissions area has developed an innovative admissions processing system that promises to enhance efficiency by reducing turnaround times by including better processes and communication measures.  This should result in substantially better client management relationship and a highly efficient system of processing, overall.

The First offshore centre is set to open in Dubai.  Ms Shyamala Elango of Inner Universe will run this centre with staff trained in GU processing protocols.   Shyamala has impeccable credentials and has many years of experience in international education as a trained counsellor and office manager in the Gulf region.

The IU  team will be looking after processing of all applications for all programs offered by
Griffith University (EXCEPT Research and Higher Degrees Programs - these will still need to be sent to Griffith University in Australia). The centre in Dubai will be responsible for all admission related processes for all applications from the Middle East region.   This means you will no longer need to send applications to Australia. They will be able to assess and issue offers from Dubai resulting in significantly reduced turnaround times and increased efficiency for the benefit of our clients and applicants.    It will boost communication as the office will be in the same region as you and hence there will be no issues relating to different time zones, etc. For more details please call 04 - 3939882 .
